SUD Treatment Admissions in LAC

In fiscal year 2022-2023 (FY2223), there were 33,668 patients that accounted for 54,773 admissions to publicly funded substance use disorder (SUD) treatment programs for alcohol or other drug addiction in Los Angeles County (LAC). The number of admissions and unique patients decreased from FY1314 to FY2021. Thereafter, the number of patients increased slightly and remained constant, while the total number of admissions increased through FY2223 (Figure 1)

From FY1314-FY2223, the number of admissions increased with age, peaking at age 26-34 (29%), then decreased with age (Figure 2). The proportion of all admissions among patients aged 26-34 increased steadily from 20% in FY1314 to 35% in FY2223. From FY1718 to FY2223, the proportion among patients aged 35-44 increased from 21% to 27% (Figure 3). 

From FY1314 to FY2223, males accounted for nearly two-thirds (62%) of publicly funded SUD treatment admissions (Figures 4-5).

From FY1314-FY2223, Latinxs accounted for over half (49%) of all publicly funded SUD treatment admissions in LAC, while Whites accounted for nearly one-third (31%), and Blacks accounted for 15% (Figure 6). 

Latinxs consistently accounted for the largest proportion of all SUD treatment admissions, which also increased from 48% in FY1718 to 56% in FY2223. The proportion of all SUD treatment admissions among Whites decreased from 34% in FY1718 to 26% in FY2223. For Blacks, the proportion increased slightly from 13% in FY1718 to 15% in FY2223 (Figure 7).

SUD Treatment Admissions by LAC Regions

In FY2223, the San Fernando region (SPA 2) accounted for the largest proportion (21%) of all publicly funded SUD treatment admissions in LAC, followed by the San Gabriel (SPA 3, 17%), South Bay/Harbor (SPA 8, 15%), South (SPA 6, 13%), Metro (SPA 4, 12%), East (SPA 7, 12%), Antelope Valley (SPA 1, 8%), and West (SPA 5, 3%) regions.

There were consistent increases in the number of publicly funded SUD treatment admissions over the past three years in the Antelope Valley (SPA 1) and South Bay/Harbor (SPA 8) regions (Figure 8)

 In FY2223, SD 5 accounted for the largest proportion (23%) of all publicly funded SUD treatment admissions in LAC, followed by SD 2 and SD 1 (both 21%), SD 4 (20%), and SD 3 (16%).

In SD 4, the number of publicly funded SUD treatment admissions increased 27% from FY2021 to FY2223 (Figure 9).
